Powassan Another Disease Caused By Tick Bite

Powassan is a virus infecting humans through a tick bite.  Powassan is named after Powassan, Ontario where child passed on from the disease.  Discovered in 1958 - present in Wisconsin today.

When an infected tick bites a human the illness usually shows itself in 1 week to 1 month.  The human infection begins to cause fever, headache, weakness, confusion, memory loss. 

The disease infects the human nervous system causing swelling in the brain and membrane surrounding the spinal cord.  The human infected with Powassan can be hospitalized to support breathing, provide fluids, and administer medications to reduce swelling. 

Prevention suggestions:

- wear long pants and long sleeves
- light clothing ticks show up better
- EPA Registered Insect Repellent
- check self and pets after hike outside
