Wisconsin Legislature Working On Alzheimer's Dementia Bills

Wisconsin Law Makers have been reviewing multiple Alzheimer's Dementia Bills designed to strengthen support for families caring for an elder with memory loss.  National research indicates an increased incidence of Alzheimer's Dementia that falls squarely on the shoulders of families.

The characteristics of the early emerging symptoms do not facilitate ready access to a medical model that will reimburse staff who help.  The progressive loss of memory creates immediate needs that do not fit with operating medical models of delivery.

The undesired symptoms have been categorized as Instrumental (more complex) Activities Of Daily Living (IADL's).  For example:

- loss of drivers license requiring door to door transportation
- disconnect stove unsafe to cook- hydration nutrition needs
- disorganized financial tasks- money owed despite adequate funds
- unable to get to grocery store procure foods
- difficulty with TV remote
- multiple trips inclement weather out to check mail box despite having retrieved the mail earlier
- pets expulsion of food due to multiple feedings creating sanitation needs
- unsafe expired food and partially consumed meals refrigerator - cupboards
- calling an electrician for a light out that merely requires the bulb changed
This is an incomplete partial list to give readers a glimpse of the changes.

The manifestation of Alzheimer's Dementia require the assistance of family, friends, and neighbors before the symptoms can be identified by medical systems that improve access to care options.  The large number of Alzheimer's Dementia bills being introduced with the Wisconsin law making process is to foster the means for elders with memory loss to remain in their homes longer.

National health planners have embedded policy initiatives that favor an innovative, non-pharmacological approach to supporting families caring for an elder with symptoms of memory loss.
