Gotta Get Outta Nursing Home Or Pay All That Money

A common elder care scenario is a situation where an elder who has done well living at home becomes ill.  Family takes the elder to the emergency room where the elder is admitted to the medical surgical floor.  The elder stays in the hospital for the 3 nights which qualify them for a rehab stay at a nursing home that will be paid by Medicare.

The hospital staff list multiple current problems that are effecting the elders ability to just go home.  The problems are related to chronic conditions that have been treated with medication over the past few years.  The problems usually involve memory changes and physical functional symptoms that indicate the senior would benefit from the help of another.

The senior is transferred from the hospital over to the nursing home to a room on the Medicare wing.  The senior does well in the nursing home for about 17 days and then the family receives notice from the nursing home staff in a meeting that coming soon the stay will no longer be paid by Medicare.

The family meets with the social services department who explain that the elder could stay in a vacant room on another wing and the family would be responsible for paying out of pocket for the room.  The elder just wants to go back to their treasured home.  The family questions how the elder could be so needy and not be eligible for reimbursement by the Medicare fund.

Social services explain there are certain benchmarks the multiple departments must assess in order to assure the senior's stay can be reimbursed by Medicare.  They agree the senior would benefit from the help of another but that level of need does not reside at the medical category that would allow the nursing home to be reimbursed for their stay by the Medicare fund.

The elder must either agree to pay for the costly stay or move out of the nursing home.  Home Care Path is a senior support service that pairs elder care assistants with a registered nurse.  The family and Home Care Path staff work with the senior to deliver the help that will get the elder safely through their day.

This is a needs based service.  That means Home Care Path is not there to sell hours but really to come up with a level of support that meets real, immediate needs while respecting the consumers budget. This flexible style of service allows support partners to pull off when family can cover- reducing the consumers  contribution on the invoice.

Home Care Path administration has worked diligently to keep the consumer cost for the help of a senior support partner at the 20 dollars per hour.  The  lower consumer cost has huge implications on the long term care of the senior.  Purchasing more support for less money is a community health care style of intervention called "Care Assurance".  This is effectively managing family resources to help assure the senior will have access to needed care.

Families often confronted with the urgent need to move their loved one from the nursing home setting question where to go from there.  Home Care Path has served many seniors who need timely assistance but eventually return to not needing our help.  This is delivering a needs based supportive care and pulling back as the senior becomes well and no longer requires a lot of help.

Families can contact Home Care Path by calling or texting 608-432-4286.  The cost of the service is 20.00 per hour.  The service can start or stop with the consumers change in needs.  It is help when you need it.
