Celery Effect Blood Pressure? Home Care Path

Celery a European ammiaceous plant (apium graveolens), the leaf stalks of which are eaten raw and also cooked. Celery has been used as a folk (originated and used by large populations of common people) remedy to lower blood pressure in Asian cultures since 200BC. Chemical researchers have isolated and identified the chemical 3-n-butyl phdhalide responsible for the blood pressure lowering effect. Celery is a unique vegetable as the chemical 3-n-butyl phdhalide is found to be in rather high concentrations. The chemical 3-n-butyl phdhalide is also what gives celery its aroma. Researchers have speculated that celery lowers blood pressure by reducing blood concentrations of stress hormones that cause blood vessels to constrict. This suggests celery might be most effective in those who's blood pressure is linked to mental stress. Although celery is high in sodium (salt) compared to other vegetables one medium stalk still contains only a mere 35mg of sodium. So eating two stalks per day to try it, would only add 70mg, an insignificant amount of sodium to the diet.
