The Village of Lake Delton has given the Kalahari Resort 10 million publicly collected dollars to build a convention center ( 212 thousand square feet) capable of serving large regional - national groups. The community is hoping the new convention center can be operational within the last quarter of 2019. This is expected to attract a huge new population of shared customers in to the Wisconsin Dells area.
In the Wisconsin Dells area non- residents aggressively consume municipal services. Wisconsin uses State income and sales tax to provide aid to the Wisconsin Dells area municipalities. Wisconsin Dells area municipalities have formed a greater reliance upon property tax due to stagnant State aid revenue. State of Wisconsin law makers have allowed municipalities in the Wisconsin Dells area to charge an additional sales tax called the premier resort tax.
With State aid payments to municipalities being stagnant and municipalities now under tight State imposed caps on property taxes - road construction projects are occurring primarily in the commercial district. Much of the commercial district known as down town Wisconsin Dells will be blocked off from motorist travel while road construction is being performed.
This is difficult on independent business operators who survive on the summer tourist revenue. The bulk of down town Wisconsin Dells business operators close for the Winter known as the off season. A summer of limited revenue due to blocked roads with construction will result in some business operators leaving the down town Wisconsin Dells commercial district never to return.
This is expected to benefit nearby historic down town Baraboo where traveling vacationers can participate in a family friendly down town retail shopping experience. The Wisconsin Dells area has entered stage II of the convention hosting industry.
