Home Care Path has been receiving greater pressure to improve access to our Family Pet Program by inpatient providers. Communication indicates more and more elders have pets in there homes. National statistics identify 180 million pets live in American homes.
One example involves a week long hospital stay and the care of a bird. The Family Pet Program went to the home daily giving the bird fresh water and the proper amount of food. This included placing the mail from the box on the porch on to the kitchen table.
The Family Pet Program is being told by inpatient providers to improve access to accommodate the unplanned need. Communication indicates the expected upgrade should be a mobile application that would allow an elder from a hospital bed to order and pay with a credit card from their hospital room.
Inpatient care coordinators report they have been asking for this for a while and it is an important piece of improving the patients recovery. Knowing their pet is being helped can give them more time to think about their own healing.
This speaks to Home Care Path's core service being collaboration. When our inpatient partners ask for our help we attempt to better accommodate these important needs. One inpatient coordinator wrote about an individual elder with multiple pets and an urgent need for service. Home Care Path perceives pets as members of the family.
