CDC Manage Communicable Disease Example Head Lice

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is the public means to control communicable disease.  Communicable disease ( there are many) is illness from an infectious agent.  This discusses the standard medical features employed to form a process for organized disease management.  Readers are reminded the bacteria, bug, germ indicate a living thing capable of evolving to make once effective medications ineffective.

Infectious agent- what is the bacteria or bug producing the infection- infestation.  Head lice also known as Pediculus humanus capitis.

Occurrence- where does the infectious agent show up.  Head lice is world wide.

Reservoir- Where does the infectious agent live.  Head lice live upon humans.

Mode of transmission- How humans get infected- infested.  Direct contact with a person infested with head lice or indirect contact with an object (hat) infested with head lice.

Incubation period- The time from when first contact infectious agent and the first undesired symptoms show up.  Head lice lay eggs on the hair shaft which can hatch in approximately 7 to 10 days.

Period of communicability- When can the infectious agent be spread.  Presence of live eggs or lice mean it can spread to another.

Susceptibility and resistance- What will block the ability of the infectious agent to work.  Any person can become infested with head lice through direct or indirect contact.

The knowledge about the infectious agent informs providers with the means to treat the person while preventing the spread of the disease.  Typical head lice treatment involves application of a  medicated shampoo that kills the eggs and lice upon the body area.  The lice tend to evolve making the medicated shampoo ineffective.  Chemical shampoo producers are challenged to formulate stronger medicated shampoos to get rid of lice.

This lends an understanding of the process used to communicate across a large network of providers working to reduce the spread of communicable disease.   This demonstrates how local community service providers employing technology can play a greater role in this ongoing effort.
