In recent research funded by the Alberta Prion Research Institute at the University of Calgary- monkeys that ate CWD infected venison tested positive for CWD. This caused the Health Products and Food Branch of the Canadian Health System to issue a statement from the research findings.
The statement reads: The potential for CWD to be transmitted to humans cannot be excluded. This coupled with Wisconsin data that continues to demonstrate a rapid spread of CWD through the white tail deer population - has the attention of the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
CWD as a disease in humans creates through proteins called prions symptoms of dementia and death. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services advises families not to eat venison from a deer that has tested positive for CWD.
Currently a hunter with a harvested white tail deer is instructed to bring the head to the (DNR) Department of Natural Resources Registration Stations for free testing for CWD. The DNR continues to question how the hunters desire to use the head and horns for a trophy would effect submission compliance for testing.
