Trace Opioid Epidemic Through Prescribing Provider 2 Health Insurance Pay Source

Community partners experiencing first hand knowledge of the opioid epidemic have started to meet with legislators.  Legislators are being trained to trace the opioid epidemic through prescribing providers to the health insurance pay source.

This can be scary for lawmakers and can cause some to jump to the notion that health insurance, medical doctors, or hospitals with clinics are bad. The idea of having to intervene at the point where a medical provider is meeting in the office with their patient seems like entering sacred ground for those holding traditional perceptions of the delivery of medical care.

Suddenly the community has to contemplate the thought that much of the illegally traded street opioids flow through licensed providers and are paid through health insurance plans.  This must be tied to the evidence that unregulated utilization of opioids is aggressively killing our family members.

Wisconsin's Health and Human Services Department performed analysis that was shared by Senator Ron Johnson that indicates States that expanded Medicaid have a higher opioid over dose death rate.   This hopes to correlate health insurance plan payments to unregulated opioid utilization resulting in more deaths.

Legal advocates in Chicago in cooperation with State Public Health officials have filed a petition with the Federal Food and Drug Administration to ban the prescribing of high- dose opioid pain killers to prevent accidental over doses. The Centers for Disease Control has shared documentation to indicate this would make a best practice guideline.

Home Care Path staff remind readers that it is not just the user that can accidently over dose - children have greater access to these deadly opioids which are stored in the dwelling.  Home Care Path believes the opioid epidemic is much too large for one discipline to fix, we all must work together to help stop these unwanted deaths.
