Congress has enacted law to eliminate 2 well known strategies used with Social Security benefits to increase retirement income. Individuals born after January 2, 1954 must comply with these new rules. The former strategies:
- Restricted Application where individual chooses only spousal benefit at full retirement after age of 66
- Voluntary Suspension where higher earning spouse files at age 66 and immediately suspended it
Restricted Application is no longer an option for anyone who reaches 62 after 2015. This is being phased out over the next 4 years.
Voluntary Suspension at age 66 will be phased out 180 days from November 2nd.
Changing these two well known long term planning strategies will cause family budgets to adjust and compensate for new calculations.
