Alzheimer's Disease is believed to be named after Alois Alzheimer a German Doctor. Alois documented the symptoms of memory loss, strange behavior, and shrinkage in the brain of a patient named Auguste D. in the year 1906.
A Psychiatrist Emil Kraepelin involved in the care of Auguste D. described the symptoms in a 1910 professional booklet as Alzheimer's disease.
In 1976 Neurologist Robert Katzman described Alzheimer's disease as the most common form of dementia and a substantial public health challenge in a published editorial. In 1987 the Warner Lambert Pharmaceutical Company now known as Pfizer contracted with William K. Summers to begin trials on the patented drug called tacrine - cognex.
In 1993 the FDA -Food and Drug Administration approved the use of tacrine- cognex for the treatment of symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease. In 2012 tacrine -cognex was removed from the United States available drug formulary.
In December 2015 the Wisconsin Medical Society Chief Medical Officer Donn Dexter MD addressing the Wisconsin Legislative Speakers Task Force on Alzheimer's and Dementia explained the population is aging, and the incidence of Alzheimer's and dementia is consistently increasing.
