Wisconsin has been granted a Federal waiver to implement a reinsurance program. The formal signing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday July 29, 2018 in Green Bay Wisconsin.
This is a 5 year reinsurance program with the State committing 34 million dollars annually and the Federal committing 166 million annually. This is money that will go to health insurance providers to pay about 50 percent of the medical claims that cost between 50 thousand dollars and two hundred thousand dollars.
This is a program designed to attract more health insurance providers to offer plans to the private market place. The increased number of health insurance plans creates the competition needed to manage pricing which will help stabilize the health insurance industry in Wisconsin.
