The Wisconsin Dells Municipal Authority is working diligently to package geography as a unified product. This is difficult considering excess general funds remain lower than twenty thousand dollars. This creates an over dependence upon local non-profits who exchange funds for control.
Public and non-profits have the louder voice when compared to private enterprise. The private side fill the role of hosting other people often not their consumer population. This devalues private property and overly stresses the tight operating budgets of existing businesses.
An example would be the public placement of outdoor areas - with the expectation of adjoining property owners and business enterprises maintaining the space. The Wisconsin Dells Community can expect to see:
- a resurgence of seasonal provision from farm produce to art dealers who receive prominent locations to rapidly sell in peak
- non-profit coordinated events such as chalking walkways and painting life size murals- private side can perform the clean up
- larger evening music events with prominent placement of non-profit food and beverage vendors to compete with local enterprise
- public and non-profit utilization (removal) of services to meet the needs of the coordinated event- such as skid load bleachers, booths, planters etc
- private property and business enterprise will be expected to contribute resources (labor and money) to assure the public - non-profit events continue
With this shift of control to the public - non-profit side, private property and existing business enterprises are devalued. Simply put the cost of doing business in Wisconsin Dells is going up.
How this will look is municipal committees will schedule time only for large well to do business operations. Small business requests will be tabled - and left for dead. Larger business providers will come in with a greater cost to the local population. In desperation expect to see the municipal authority trade both private and publicly held real estate to get a large group of investors to set up a lodging, entertainment and retail complex.
Larger business models will have no problems with the placement of signs or a canvas awning, but the smaller shops will be held to a different standard. This can be explained as a symptom of control shifting to favor the public- non-profit side. It will be a great summer to be operating as a charitable non-profit in Wisconsin Dells.
