Control Collected Possessions Inter Vivos Gifts

Inter vivos is a gift made while the giver is still alive.  Testamentary is the sending of gifts after the giver has died.  Increasingly seniors will ask for help to distribute the objects they have collected to family and friends.

This process assures the senior the item that has been gifted is in safe possession of the receiver. The pertinent historical information accompanies the chosen object. Steps include:

Selecting the item to distribute, this involves allowing the senior ample time to discuss thoughts and feelings related to the piece.

Identifying the chosen recipient.  This involves assuring accurate contact information, and shipping address.

Documenting the item.  This can include a photograph, as well as all the pertinent historical infromation that can enhance the value of the item.  The next residence (home of receiver) is recorded. Some of this will be forwarded to the receiver with the item.

Packing the item.  The item is packed in as small and safe a container as possible.  Properly packing is the key to safe shipping.

Shipping the item.  The various shipping services available through USPS are discussed and chosen for presentation to clerk.  The item is taken to the shipper and a shipping receipt is returned and recorded with the accumulated documentation.

Follow up of the item.  Tracking of the item and follow up insures the possession is received and safely in new residence.
